How many direct debits?

Options
Just been checking my bank account and was surprised to see that I have amassed 24 direct debits. I checked through them to make sure that I hadn't forgotten to cancel any old memberships etc., but, no, they were all in order. It's amazing how many you build up over the years.
I came into this world with nothing and I've got most of it left.

I pay anything and everything by DD. Looking at my one current account right now I have 19 and one of them is an unused duplicate coming from my previous account which I switched from. I hesitate to remove it because then I'll get a letter saying something like, "Oh you b'tard, you cancelled our direct debit."

In January I'll be moving to more ethical banking by moving my income and direct debits to Coventry Building Society Money Manager account.

I'm a relatively new member and haven't considered playing the game yet, so I have one, solitary, lonely bank account :(

Never mind playing any games, by having all your eggs in one basket you run the risk of not being able to access any of your funds in the event of technical problems with your one bank, or if they decided to block your access for any reason. So, I'd humbly suggest getting another current account opened pronto with another banking group....
  • It's a sad indictment of the current state of affairs when you have to have a bank account in reserve in case your main bank decides to deprive you of your money. What a mess.

  • I have an old Santander (was alliance&leicster) instant access savings account with a card that will get me £300 a day. It has had a fiver in it for ages and I still have online access. Guess I could pay some funds across by FP and leave it sitting there for such an event.
    I even remember my PIN.......

  • Took your sage advice, eskbanker, there is now £1000 in the Santander account. :)

If you're going to 'play the game', Tesco is a good place to start. No minimum pay in and no DDs needed. It's my second most used account after my main Nationwide account. I use it to park money after payday before sending off to regular savers and to top up my Nationwide account account as bills came out.

Thanks, I'll have a look now.
