You do realise that the previous owners burgled your house? I know there was only a child gate to take but they still entered a property that didn't belong to them and without the owner's permission and removed something from the property. You need to check to make sure that they haven't taken anything else that they have" forgotten." Check that they haven't removed anything like toilet roll holders or mirrors. Someone who will break into a house that they don't own anymore doesn't have any respect for other people's property.

Change the locks in case they think of something else they want.
  • ALWAYS change the locks when you get a new place. People let all sorts of other people have keys, they trust them because they know them. You don't.

  • Also, if you have any alarms, change the codes too, on the first day. That way even if your locksmith doesn't turn up till day 3/4 at least the previous occupiers can't disable the alarms too. You can get almost every manual online now if there isn't one when you move in.

  • This was such a strange thread to stumble upon...I had a dream last night I was hiding in my old house when the new owners came round. I was looking for a necklace! :)

Must have been a night for us all as I also dreamt about our old house too!!!
I dreamt I still had the key and travelled half way round the UK to see if it still worked! I opened the door and found a massive pile of post for us. Then an alarm began beeping so I scooped up the post & made a run for it!!!
How glad was I when I woke up in my own bedroom this morning and realised it was only a dream! clap.gif

Anytime you have a new property, day 1 is change the locks, you never know who has a copy.

I would not expect sellers to pay for it, but you are lucky in this case as you now found out a valuable lesson early on and it was just their child gate.

I learnt this lesson also, 2 days after completion (Sunday), my Mum went around to show my Sister as I working, it was empty expect for old owners clothes in the corner, the old owner was there collecting the rest of their stuff! I was going to get them on the Monday new barrels, but I managed to get the DIY shop that day and did them myself, it was enough - I am no way DIY minded - I don't even own a drill.

To break in would require forced entry, they didn't, they had a key.

They didn't burgle the house. They trespassed. Quite different.
  • I would call it both burglary and trespass. They trespassed into someone else's house and they stole something whilst there (ie the childgate). Definitely a concern they might still be regarding something else as "theirs" (even though it isn't) and be planning to trespass again and steal that too.

I'd already arranged for a locksmith to come round literally the evening of Completion Day when I bought current house - though that was partly down to having (perfectly correctly as it showed) decided the vendor was of the type not to be trusted in any way. I went to sleep that night with all locks duly safely changed already.

You won't be due to have them cover the cost of those locks - because it's deemed that buyers will automatically change the locks themselves anyway.

change the locks (which you probably should have done on the Friday anyway) and move on. You have suffered no loss.

Ridiculous, it was their property they retrieved, so no theft going on.
