New Laptop Problem

I bought an HP G6 Notebook in the sale 6 months ago and haven't got round to using it until the other day. My problem is that it won't recognise a wi fi security code, either at my home or at a friend's house.

Looking on line, I found a solution that involved starting from the taskbar but it seems I can't get into Windows without an internet connection so I'm stuck.

Does anybody have any possible solutions (worded simply) before I take it somewhere to be sorted out.

Many thanks.

I guess the internet is needed if you logon using an "email registered with Microsoft" account rather than a local account. You can change to a local account easily...e.g.

As for HP G6 wifi issues, sounds familiar. Reset winsock catalogue possibly?

Can you you connect to your router with an ethernet (network) cable to get on the 'net to get yourself started?

Thanks, that's my next step. I did manage to activate Windows by phone but that hasn't made any difference, unfortunately.:(

Hi again. Works perfectly using ethernet cable but still won't recognise my security key for wifi so any ideas for next step gratefully received. Will check back later.

Start -> (in the) Search Programmes and files box -> type "command prompt" (without quotes)

When you see "Command prompt" - right click it and click "Run as Administrator"

When the Comand Prompt window opens, you will see a black box with white text.
    Immediately after the last line of text (no space) type;
sfc /scannow (leave a space between sfc and /)
    - press Enter and WAIT.

    When next line opens, type:
ipconfig /flushdns (leave a space before /) - press Enter

    When next line opens, type:
netsh int ip reset (see the 3 spaces?)
    - IGNORE "Restart Computer" - press Enter

    When next line opens, type:
netsh winsock reset (see the 2 spaces?)- press Enter
    NOW Restart Computer

After the computer restarts, try again to access wireless.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

I'd go back to basics, are the Region also Language, found in Control Panel, set correctly?
If keyboard is set to e.g. US, then '@' symbol and a few others can be transposed, meaning you may not be typing in your wifi code as you think.
    Move along, nothing to see.

have you checked with the router admin pages to make sure the key is what you think it is oh and the case is important so make sure caps lock/num lock keys are set to what you expect them to be especially if you are using the numeric keypad rather than the top numbers...

p.s. hi spud it must be an evening :p

Long shots: Is the HP wireless assistant up to date? In device manager is the wifi driver okay (no yellow !)?
You know what uranium is, right? It's this thing called nuclear weapons. And other things. Like lots of things are done with uranium. Including some bad things.
