Wedding reading ideas

HELP!

My luverly friend has today asked me to do a reading at her wedding!!!!

Her wedding is a week tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Apparently she asked me several months ago on a girls night out & I was really excited about it and agreed with lots of enthusiasm - that evening also involved Vodka so I do not remember! :o

I've been trawling various websites for inspiration and have a few ideas but was wondering if any of you fancy sharing any favourite reading/poem thingies with me in case you have a super dooper luverly one thta I haven't found.

Oh, the wedding is going to be at a hotel & apparently I'm not allowed to refer to anything 'too religious' if that makes sense :confused:
Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...

Do your friend and her hubby-to-be not have a reading picked out for you? Or at least an idea of ones they've seen and liked?

If not, how about trying the local library and asking for books of poems and readings?

Good luck!

Thanks for both your replies - haven't looked at hitched.co.uk yet so off to have a look.

I am getting married in 2 weeks and am having the following:

Becasue she would ask me why I loved her
ByChristopher Brennan

If questioning would make us wise
No eyes would ever gaze in eyes;
If all our tale were told in speech
No mouths would wander each to each.

Were spirits free from mortal mesh
And love not bound in hearts of flesh
No aching breasts would yearn to meet
And find their ecstasy complete.

For who is there that lives and knows
The secret powers by which he grows?
Were knowledge all, what were our need
To thrill and faint and sweetly bleed?.

Then seek not, sweet, the "If" and "Why"
I love you now until I die.
For I must love because I live
And life in me is what you give.

I love the last verse.

Here are the 2 we had at our wedding in 2002. It was a church wedding (Methodist church) but because we didn't have hymns, we were allowed to have readings instead.

Why Marriage?(Author Unknown)

Because to the depths of me, I long to love one person,With all my heart, my soul, my mind, my body...Because I need a forever friend to trust with the intimacies of me,Who won't hold them against me,Who loves me when I'm unlikeable,Who sees the small child in me, andWho looks for the divine potential of me... Because I need to cuddle in the warmth of the nightWith someone who thanks God for me,With someone I feel blessed to hold... Because marriage means opportunityTo grow in love in friendship... Because marriage is a disciplineTo be added to a list of achievements... Because marriages do not fail, people failWhen they enter into marriageExpecting another to make them whole... Because, knowing this,I promise myself to take full responsibilityFor my spiritual, mental and physical wholeness I create me,I take half of the responsibility for my marriageTogether we create our marriage...Because with this understandingThe possibilities are limitless.

Blessing For A Marriage

James Dillet Freeman

May your marriage bring you all the exquisite excitements a marriage should bring, and may life grant you also patience, tolerance, and understanding.May you always need one another - not so much to fill your emptiness as to help you to know your fullness. A mountain needs a valley to be complete; the valley does not make the mountain less, but more; and the valley is more a valley because it has a mountain towering over it. So let it be with you and you.May you need one another, but not out of weakness.May you want one another, but not out of lack.May you entice one another, but not compel one another.May you embrace one another, but not encircle one another.May you succeed in all important ways with one another, and not fail in the little graces.May you look for things to praise, often say, "I love you!" and take no notice of small faults.If you have quarrels that push you apart, may both of you hope to have good sense enough to take the first step back.May you enter into the mystery which is the awareness of one another's presence - no more physical than spiritual, warm and near when you are side by side, and warm and near when you are in separate rooms or even distant cities. May you have happiness, and may you find it making one another happy. May you have love, and may you find it loving one another!

Best wishes

Aunty Margaret

PS: I think I got these from the 'Confetti' site online.

I've been to a wedding where this was a reading:

A BIRTHDAY
Christina Rossetti

My heart is like a singing bird
Whose nest is in a water'd shoot;
My heart is like an apple-tree
Whose boughs are bent with thick-set fruit;
My heart is like a rainbow shell
That paddles in a halcyon sea;
My heart is gladder than all these,
Because my love is come to me.

Raise me a daïs of silk and down;
Hang it with vair and purple dyes;
Carve it in doves and pomegranates,
And peacocks with a hundred eyes;
Work it in gold and silver grapes,
In leaves and silver fleurs-de-lys;
Because the birthday of my life
Is come, my love is come to me.

Thanks Mini - There are some good ones on there. My favourite one so far is this: (dont worry - I wont read it but the child in me LOVES it :D )

Us Two from Now We Are Six
A.A. Milne (1882-1956)

Wherever I am, there's always Pooh,
There's always Pooh and Me.
Whatever I do, he wants to do,
"Where are you going today?" says Pooh...
"Well, that's very odd 'cos I was too.
"Let's go together," says Pooh, says he.
"Let's go together," says Pooh.

"What's twice eleven?" I said to Pooh,
"Twice what?" said Pooh to Me.
"I think it ought to be twenty two."
"Just what I think myself," said Pooh.
"It wasn't an easy sum to do,
But that's what it is," said Pooh, said he.
"That's what it is," said Pooh.

"Let's look for dragons," I said to Pooh.
"Yes, let's," said Pooh to Me.
We crossed the river and found a few...
"Yes, those are dragons all right," said Pooh.
"As soon as I saw their beaks I knew.
That's what they are," said Pooh, said he.
"That's what they are," said Pooh.

"Let's frighten the dragons," I said to Pooh.
"That's right," said Pooh to Me.
"I'm not afraid," I said to Pooh,
And I held his paw and I shouted "Shoo!
Silly old dragons!"... and off they flew.
"I wasn't afraid," said Pooh, said he,
"I'm never afraid with you."

So wherever I am, there's always Pooh,
There's always Pooh and Me.
"What would I do?" I said to Pooh,
"If it wasn't for you," and Pooh said... "True,
It isn't much fun for One, but Two
Can stick together," says Pooh, says he.
"That's how it is," says Pooh.
