gas oven -removing knobs

I'm giving my stoves gas oven a thorough clean but I can't properly access the area around the gas control knobs and the body of the oven. I'm feeling inclined to see if I can pull the knobs off to clean the grunge away. Trouble is, if I pull them off will they go back on again.? Has anyone tried this and is it safe to do please?

We have a Stove oven and separate gas hob. The knobs pull out easily (they are held in place by a small spring clip. Just pull and they will come. Just push them back in place the right way when you are done. If you don't live far, you could come and do mine !0

all the gas hobs I have ever owned (3 I think?) have had removable knobs....if it looks like this http://www.sainsburyskitchenappliances.co.uk/Product_Information.aspx?Productid=4837
then usually you just pull the knob off upwards. Sometimes they are a bit stiff the first times - especially if they are mucky, so use a table knife (not a sharp one) to help lever it off.
Hope this helps
