Hi I have put new hinges on some interior doors and Now two have what I can only describe as a spring opening
There is a slight residents when closing them a nd when I open them they will spring open a bit
What have I done wrong?

My first door install was as such, the angle of the brackets meant that to sit closed, the door had to be pushed further than the natural closed position - hence the resistance. I had to remove the door and get a more level rebate in the frame.

If it's any consolation, mine was so bad, that turning the handle caused the door to near open fully.

  • Might seem a silly question, but are the hinges on the right way round, so the screws are properly recessed into the countersinks?

Yes and I did go and Check :) I think it may well just be the rebate as the new hinges are a bit bigger and thicker
    But thanks

Sounds like the doors are binding.

Stand on the side of the door that has the hinges on . Then start to shut the door and just as it starts to get close to being closed look at the knuckle of the hinge. If when you slowly finish closing the door it starts to pull round/move then you need to chisel the hinge in deeper , not the knuckle end as that is what sets the gap /joint. So you may well need to chisel the wide flap section of the hinge in deep but don't chisel the knuckle in any deeper.

The only other thing I can think of is the edge of the doors are hitting on the door stops. In which case release the fixing screws and re fix the screws a little further out so it pulls the doors away from the stops.

    Difficult to explain in words...:)

Are the hinges set too deep into the door or frame?

Thank you for your replies and advice
the top hinge just needed a bit of the rebate making deeper this seems to have solved the problem
    thanks again
