Moving up north

I know I posted this before but I am really thinking about leaving the south east, I live near london and the property prices are a joke compared to average wages.

I want to move to the midlands/ further north, but the jobs I can see or want to apply for are mainly 19K a year is this enough to buy a property? How hard is it to find a job up north rather than in london? Where can I find out which big businesses are in a given city?

Quick reply, I live 15 mins from Warrington, 20 mins from Chester and Liverpool and 35 mins from Manchester, all very big towns/cities and there is always work opportunity of some sort.

House prices vary immensely, round where I live in sunny Runcorn, it's considered not desirable, but there are some nice bits and a 3 bed semi in those would cost 200kish. Terrace nearer the centre would be about 75kish. If you want to live in the middle of a city, then obviously a lot more expensive. Rightmove is your friend there.

Not that I can find, at least, not using your current user name. Care to give us a clue?

As we don't know what sort of job you are looking for or what savings you have it's difficult to give any meaningful answer to your questions.

depends on where you want to live - but for our sake please stay in the south, its grim up north and we'd like to keep it that way.

by the way the average house round us is £350k-400k and average salary about 16k so won't get far here.....

There are reasons to move up north (as there is anywhere) but cheaper house prices isn't one. Sure they are cheaper but the wages are worse so if you don't earn enough to own a property in the south east it's likely you won't up north either. It's also likely you won't have a higher disposable income.

'The North' is a big area. You need to look at specific areas, and loo at the jobs available for someone with your skills and interests, and at the house prices for that area.

Then pop those details into a mortgage calculator to get a feel for what you might be able to borrow, and think about your other outgoings and whether you could live on the kind of income you might be able to earn.

Bear in mind that house prices may be lower in some areas in the North, but that you still have to pay bills, buy food, clothes, etc, and presumably you'll still want things such as holidays . SO you need to look at your over all budget and o the sums for your personal circumstances.

It would give some context if you say where in the north/ Midlands you live. Around Sheffield it is certainly possible to earn an average wage and get on the housing ladder, and to have a decent disposable income. Leeds and Manchester have become more expensive, Liverpool and Nottingham there's a good mix that means if you're willing to compromise you'll be able to buy and still live well.

Plus we're far friendlier up here, even if it does get colder!

When i had to go to the JC to sign-on there seemed to be plenty of jobs there, all be it that most were on minimum pay. I go shopping regularly to Lidl in St Helens and there's a big sign that's always outside asking for assistants with pay starting at about £8.50ph Ok you might get paid more in London, but this isn't a bad area, and with new build flats costing £75k or small houses at £100k. You must be better off away from 'the bright lights'.

This is the Dwp jobcentre site. Pick the area of the Country you think you may like to live and do a search for the type of jobs that may be available.

In that link, the 1bed flat in a converted church, Meribel Square for £55k, why would anyone pay rent when you could buy something like that ?
What would you pay for something similar in London ?
Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

Where are you actually from? Is it worth abandoning your whole social network just for a cheaper house, bearing in mind you'll never be able to move back to the South East and buy?
