Car Insurance before 17th Birthday

Options
Hi

My daughter is 17 in January and we were hoping to buy her a very cheap little car for her birthday so that she can practice driving ahead of her test. My car is a lease car (no under 25s) and wife's is a 1.9 turbo diesel so neither are available for practice.

In order to be the surprise on birthday morning, the car obviously needs to be picked up and delivered at least the day before and whilst we could insure it on our names, we don't want to "front" and want her NCB started asap.

Are there any insurers that will insure her as lead driver with myself as named driver but her element doesn't kick in until her 17th?

I don't suppose for a second we are the first to do this so surprised I haven't found a solution online so far.

I haven't identified the car yet so may not be from a dealer so using their insurance to get the car home isn't likely to be an option. And I don't want to go to the expense of trailering a £500 car.

Only alternative I can see is the monthly insurance companies in my name but believe these are expensive generally?

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks

No idea about insuring it in her name while she's under 17 - but if you just need cover to get it home you can get a policy in your own name which covers it for 1 day or for a handful of days - Google "short term car insurance" for some providers. I believe the going rate is a few tens of pounds, so it's expensive in comparison to an annual policy, but probably cheaper than having it trailered.

Why not pick it up on the day? Arrange to pop into the garage for something and then spring it on her.

Dont forget to tax it before driving away.

  • Combination of the above really. Start a policy in her name with effect from her Birthday. Pick it up on the day or take out a temporary policy for a few days if you really need to pick it up beforehand.

If she is a learner you won't be fronting. What I did was insure the car in my name until my son passed his test. I then cancelled my policy and took out one in his name.

As I stayed with the same insurance company for both policies I didn't have to pay a cancellation fee.
  • Didn't think it was fronting if she's declared as main the driver?

Tagging on to the above, if the car is registered in the youngsters name and they are driving it more often than you, then it is still fronting unless this is declared.

In this situation, OP actually wants to have it in the daughters name to build up some bonus and have it all in her name, just wanted to know options on how best to handle it for the few days leading up to her birthday without the hassle of switching round policies etc.

We added it to my DH's policy and then took out a policy in DD's name effective from her birthday. Insurers charged a small additional premium for the 3 months it was on cover as they allowed DH a no claims bonus.
