Fixing credit report

Hi my husband and I have decided to look at going for a mortgage, my credit report is fine, however my husband has a default on his for approx. £1320 for an overdraft he had years ago with his bank at the time.
We contacted the Debt Collection agency who said that they had passed the debt back to the original bank.
We wanted to get this settled asap and then went back to the bank, who said they aren't actively looking for the money back, that they were not chasing him for the money.
My priority is getting this "settled" on his account, should we just ask the bank to let us pay it, and have his file updated?
Any advice would be great thank you
