    For what reason?

So you have a spare for the next time one goes and you can keep on running whilst you order another new set.

I change the ones on our cars every couple of years, nothing worse than wipers which don't wipe properly, especially at this time of year.

With a tear I can't see how they can be very effective, they must be ancient.
Too right. All my vehicles get a new set of wiper blades all round every November, whether they look like they need it or not. Must cost me £20 a year. Might not be MSE, but it might be LSE.

Only if you want it to pass the MOT because it will fail otherwise.

Just bought a complete set of Bosch wipers for a Honda Civic, two front and one rear from http://www.wiperblades.co.uk/ for under £30, delivered in two days and fitted in 5 minutes.

Ops already said it clears the windscreen so no reason itnwill fail

    In their opinion.

Torn wiper blades will fail the MOT.

I'd rather go straight to the horse's mouth...

8.2.2 - A wiper blade insecure, missing, or in such a condition that it does not clear the windscreen effectively to give the driver an adequate view of the road (through the windscreen) to the left and right sides of the vehicle, as well as to the front.
p178 of the PDF. So the tester is ONLY looking for whether the wiper actually clears effectively at the time of the test. If there's a tear in it, but it still cleans effectively in the tester's opinion, it cannot and will not fail.

But if it's starting to tear, it's utterly shagged, and should be replaced asap. Because it WILL tear fully before long, and will quite possibly scratch the windscreen when it does, as well as no longer cleaning effectively.

No they won't. Best to use a real MOT test site. https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/mot-inspection-manual-for-class-3-4-5-and-7-vehicles

Torn, on its own, is not sufficient to fail the test.

    edit: beaten to it ;)

Cut the flappy bit off before it gets worse - it'll be less likely to tear further if you do :)

I'm struggling to see the problem here. Wiper blades wear out, they need replacing. MOT fail or not ... replace the bloody things ! They ain't exactly expensive, and they ain't exactly difficult to change. And particularly coming up to winter, being able to see clearly is a slight advantage when it comes to driving safely.

I do wonder - if the OP is struggling to decide whether or not to replace the wiper blades, what state is the rest of his/her car in ???

A tear in a windscreen wiper isn't a reason for refusal, the same as windscreen damage, both items only become a failure if they affect the drivers view of the road.

Not quite - windscreen damage is an explicit fail, if it fits certain size/location criteria, even if it doesn't affect the view.
