Japanese Import Pick-up 'Car' Insurance

Hi all,

My partner drives a pick-up truck, it is only being used for domestic, recreational and commuting use. He's not a manual labourer and it's a double-cab truck.

As it's a Japanese import and not from after 1992 (however it's not on a Q-plate), not all main stream insurer want to have us as customers. For the past few years we have been insured through Adrian FLux, but I'm seriously wondering if there are any other companies out there who might be able to beat their £670 renewal quote.

The comparison websites don't work for us as our 'car' is never listed as a standard option.

Has anyone experienced similar issues or are you very happy with your current insurer? Please let me know as I want to explore all options before settling for our £670 renewal quote.

Thanks a lot!

  • MeNikki, I just posted a question straight after you about the same problem! My husband also drived a double-cab pick up truck (although not a japanese import) ours is the Nissan Navara. We are currently insured with Direct Line and it costs us £532 per year. I'd like to find a cheaper quote but like you, most websites don't have these vehicles listed under their options ... so please let me know if you have any joy. You could try Direct Line for your own quotation. cheers rockofages.
  • We drive a Pajero which is a Jap import and we got the best deal from Admiral insurance. Dont pay it over 12 months though works out a lot more expensive.
  • Apparently our Toyota Hilux is a different spec than more common ones - it's engine size is abnormal at 1,755cc (or so it seems). Admiral, my partner's previous insurer on his old car, wouldn't insure it and recommended Adrian Flux instead.
I'll keep looking though....haven't given up just yet :-)
