Car insurance cancellation - hidden fee

My renewal came through sky high so I called them and told them not to renew it. Was told direct debit would be cancelled and no further action required. Just had an email to say there is an outstanding balance on my account! Is this normal?! I don't see why I should have to pay any sort of fee to cancel my policy when it finished..

No-one here can explain why (they say) you owe them money!
You need to dispute this with them and take it from their reply.
Ask them to itemise the balance outstanding for you in writing0 -
