Did not know that coal ash shouldn't be put in the council compost bins. My recycling guide just states "cold ash" nothing about what type of ash. I'll put it in the waste bin in future.
I have a stove and open fire. Burning mostly smokeless fuel, kiln dried logs and verdo heat logs.0 -

Yeah, the upside-down method is amazing for an open fire, but not sure it would work in a stove. You basically put the wood in and light it, then you don't have to touch it for four hours.
The alternative being mucking around with it every 15 minutes.0 -
Incidentally, for people who buy smallish quantities, Wickes have a good promotion on at the moment. 3 * 20 Kg kiln dried logs for the price of two - £29.98.
If you buy 6 and use discount code BLACK10 you will get them for £49.86.
Free delivery.
And 2% cash back from TCB.

To make a roaring fire.
1. Small bed of smokeless coal - say a dozen coals
2. two small logs of similar size sitting parallel
3. Drop a lit fire lighter between the two.
4. Make a 3 or 4 layer grid of kindling
5. Open all vents for maximum air to get it going
5. Enjoy0 -

Stacked or loose?
Fresh, seasoned, or kiln dried?
So many variables when buying firewood!0 -
-Woodburner
-Only logs from a local farm, seasoned hardwood mainly
-Kindling usually offcuts of wood rough sawn and chopped
To light: roll and knot 4 double page sheets of newspaper (I find the telegraph burns best. Grid of kindling on top, log or two on top of that, light, shut door with vent full open, close down when burning briskly.
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.0 -
We have a couple of open fires and a stove. I used to burn coal but changed when I got access to free trees, mainly oak, ash and alder with a bit of hazel an the odd conifer chucked in. Kindling is usually chopped up pallet or, more lately, all the small stuff left over from converting trees into logs. Another user of Wilko firelighters too.
I tend to do a load all at once and then let the logs season for two or three. I say I, but my wife helps.
