Is this such a daft idea?

My kids think I'm mad but I'm moving house next week with 3 cats and for a house warming present I suggested a solar powered water feature for the cats!
Bear in mind that they all drink from the muddiest puddles anyway - would i have to change the water more than once every few days?
I did buy an indoor water fountain but the tap-drinker just kept bushing his tail at it! I took it back because I didn't like the design - it was bottom of the price range though!
I didn't realise just how playful the cats are so I want lots of things to spark their interest in the new house. They will venture into the garden with me very soon after moving!
Is it really daft - or just indulgent!

I suppose it depends how small or where the reservoir is, for example if it was in a buried tank, or a small tub I think it could get rank pretty quick. At least with puddle the rain is fresh and dries up or drains away. In a reservoir you could get algae building up.
Pumps on the solar ones also tend to be a bit weak so you are unlikely to get a good stream
Not very pretty but how about something hitched to an irrigation system or a lawn watering device? Mind you those are often sold as a cat scarer
By the way there is nothing mad about buying things for cats, the mad bit is if you expect them to use the things you buy!0 -
I have known people who bought those electric water fountains for both cats and small dogs, only to find that they were terrified (possibly because of the motor noise) of the contraption and refused to go near.
My son once bought a battery run tank of 'insects' for his cats and they were afraid of that.0 -
Set up a water butt outside, to collect rainwater, draw off some of it into a small container - leave outside in easy reach.
Cats, will wander about outside, come across the water - sniff it notice the lack of chlorine smell and start drinking.
At this time of year, really no need, but next year spring & summer, ideal.I used to work for Tesco - now retired - speciality Clubcard0
