No. Firstly you should check your exchange's providers as some can give better speeds than others.

How exactly when they use the same equipment and more importantly, the same old copper wires from the exchange to the house?

Secondly you can get a better speed, even if you have copper wires, as it's likely they have a FTTC setup in your rural area.

4G is not really stable in most parts and the speed can be pretty erratic.

It is very stable, on VF I am getting 20mb/s download and on EE 70mb/s download speed. Been using the VF SIM in the Huawei router for nearly 4 weeks now, not yet had an issue with either the network, nor the router.

Not to mention it's cost and coverage can be on a very slidy scale. You can go for a SIM only plan and use an old Android phone to bypass the data limit.

Just remember though that it's a grey area and the ISP could penalize you.

Using 4G for broadband is do-able but would depend on the local coverage - obviously the closer you are to a 4G enabled mast the better. If you are right on the border of coverage for a mast (3g or 4g) the area it covers can shrink when the mast gets busy - so if you have full or near bars, should not be an issue.
  • I'm thinking of buying a laptop, could anyone tell me what I would need to buy to use it with 4g?
