is insurance a big concern, you can pic up some fun stuff like merc 190e's and bmw 525s for buttons, they are massivly overengineered and give very little trouble for their age. merc 190e's start at the £500 mark and are good for 300,000 miles before mechanical niggles show up.

parts wise if your getting a cheap runabout you might as well get them cheap off ebay/scrap yards and at that point it doesnt really matter about brand.

i bought a j plate (well private but 91 reg) as a first car and ill admit petrol consumption aint great but hey its ultra reliable(outlasted 3 other family cars) looks hot and if you get skint you dont need to drive, better spend cash on petrol than depreciation.

  • I've always been lucky with Fords and Volvos.

I have a friend who used to work in the motor trade and he said avoid Fiat and Renault but things have probably improved since his day.
  • What about a SEAT Ibiza, you can get a fairly decent one for that money and as they are made by VW they are very reliable, we are on our fourth SEAT and have never had any major problems, you can also get spares from laces like Eurocarparts and GSF who are dead cheap.

Also google your chosen car brand forum, you should get some good advice there.

i have just traded in a w reg corsa which i bought 2 years ago for 1500 never had a problem with it plus the insurance was cheap

  • Volvo parts do tend to be expensive, unless of course you can source them from a scrap yard and fit them yourself.
I have, in the past had 2 citroen ax's and also a citroen zx, all walked the MOT's and never had any problems apart from one tyre!
I've got a Yaris at the moment that I brought new four years ago. Again, no mechanical problems, but I think that you'll struggle to find one on your budget, but I could be wrong.
Good luck with the search and don't forget to get insurance quotes before you buy a car so you don't get stung! My Yaris is only group 2.... really cheap insurance! Auto Express (I think) tells you all insurance groups of cars.

i'm tempted to look at this hyundai accent 1.3 year 2001, costing 1150 pounds. sounds a bit cheap for a korean car which is not that old. what do you guys think? does it sound dodgy or kosher?

Sounds too expensive, it will have to be in excellent condition to be worth that much.

Haynes manuals are a great way to learn. You will find the tools are expensive, but buy good ones, and they will last a lifetime. I tend to avoid halfords tools but they have one good thing about them - a lifetime guarantee (alledgedly - I'll let you know when I have taken back a halfords bit which broke on me the other day)
