Using tiles to replace skirting

Hi,

Just had a kitchen fitted and just wanted to get opinions on the idea of using the same floor tile to provide a neat edge to replace the skirting board. Anyone done this before - does it look ok? Any downsides? Or it is a crazy idea? I'd be extending the idea to cover the family room and utility area as well as its an open plan arrangement.

Thanks...

    I've helped Parliament
I had this done in my bathroom and it looks lovely. No issues.

As the tiles were sharp edged after cutting the guy who did my bathroom put a silver edging strip on top to give a lovely finish (the tiles are grey)

Yes done this several times, make sure you really think about the height of the tile on the wall and experiment with different heights to get the right look. Rather than use the same tile as on the floor you could consider using a border tile

Usually the surface behind the existing skirting requires some preparation to make sure its sound and level before you can tile on it satisfactorily,

They do this in italy - have italian relatives - it looks way better than skirting and much tougher and less hassle than repainitng skirting boards.
I'll be doing it in mine

They do that in Spain too. They make shaped tiles which are designed for this purpose. We brought some to fit in our UK bathroom.

  • I did this with mine - it was a useful way to use up various offcuts !
  • I agree, often done in med countries and can look very good.
Done in a new utility room, slate floor tiles and used offcuts round edges. Slate good as it is soft and can easily be given a chamfer on top edge. Ceramic or porcelain you need to use offcuts with a finished edge (or as already mentioned an edging strip).
Although used cement based adhesive on 75mm high tiles, top edge and joint between skirting and floor done with appropriately coloured silicon to give a water seal in ours. Result looks well, no painting, easy to replace some if ever damaged, hygienic, rodent/dog/spider etc proof :-)

I would say ideal for kitchen, utility, bathrooms and the like!
