P45 confusion

Hi and thanks
I am being made redundant on 31st of December after 5 years at work. I have asked how long universal credit takes to setup and was told about 6 weeks until payment. I am being paid up until 31st of December. Universal credit comes into my town on 16th December. Is there any way i can apply for universal credit on the 16th so i dont have to wait until the 31st December to do it?

What date could i tell HMRC to stop my working tax credits? Can i tell them i stopped working on 31st December, even though i will apply for universal credit on 16th? I am just trying to do things right but on the other hand i want to apply for it 2 weeks earlier. My p45 can be issued by the company on 16th should i need it that way, but i will be paid still on the 31st in full.

You'd tell tax credits the actual date you stop working. You'll be entitled to WTC for a further 4 weeks.

Your last date of employment will be the 31st so make sure your P45 says that. You'll be entitled to a 4 week run on of WTC when it finishes.

UC isn't in yet where I am but, it's supposed to replace tax credits, so shouldn't DWP look after all that? Or are they so far behind in the roll out that the system still can do that level of stuff?

In fairness, it has only been 6 years in the making.

DS is right, although if you claim UC after you stop work then you won't get the 4 week run-on.

The way the legislation is written for people moving from tax credits to UC works means that it overrides the four week run-on.

They may pay out the four-week run-on while your UC claim is being looked at, but once it goes into payment they will inform HMRC and the tax credit award terminated the day before the UC entitlement starts.
