Hi
I am planning on visiting York to do a spot of shopping in time for Christmas.
I have been before with my school on a residential trip around eoght years ago, but have never done a full scale of the city as we only got a chance to see the impressive National Railway Museum.
I will be travelling on the train, so I am just wondering are there any popular tourist spots for shopping or maybe any shopping centres?
Thanks!

We went to York around 4yrs ago for a week long city break. We stayed at the Guy Fawkes Inn" where he was born which is 20ft away from York Minster ( lovelly place to pop in).
It was a great place to visit and we spent the week just walking around the city visiting the museums etc. The National Railway Museum was really cool and I'm not really into trains.
The Yorvik centre was good as was the "York chocolate story" , The York dungeons and York Castle Museum were also really good . We wanted to try Betty's tea room but it was full up with mostly Japanese tourists so we struggled to get in all week. We also did a boat trip on the River Ouse which was ok but that was early Summer so they may not be running.
Plenty to do In York and you don't need a car .The only downside is its not cheap and easy to spend money there. Not sure about the big shopping centres but there are some really nice shops in York..............
Worth mentioning there are some great Street performers and buskers there including Ed Alleyne -Johnson who has an electronic fiddle/violin and he is really worth stopping to listen too if he's around.0 -

York's Festive Fayre
Thursday 17 November - Friday 23 December 2016
Parliament Street, St Sampson’s Square & Coppergate, York
York's Christmas Fayre brings an extra special magic to York this Christmas. York's Parliament Street offers a festive market in the lead up to Christmas. York's Festive Fayre returns with its modern festive atmosphere bringing gifts, smells and tastes, local producers and a Festive Inne. There will be something a little special at this year's market, ensuring a Christmas event to remember. Come along and see for yourself!
If you've got the time, there's a huge McArthur Glen discount outlet just off the ring road - if you don't have a car, there's a bus service.
Enjoy!0 -
York is actually a fairly small city. I live there and have often walked from one side to the other, along the river walk (currently flooded so not usable) in little over an hour. I second visiting the market, the Shambles and the Castle Museum. The shopping area in the centre of York is a reasonable size for walking around. My favourite activity in York is just strolling around the city centre and exploring all the quaint old streets and tiny quirky shops.
The Minster is great and do walk the city walls if you have time and the weather is okay--they give a great view of the city.
McArthur Glen to the south of the city is a good designer outlet. Monks Cross to the north of the city has John Lewis and other big stores, so is worth a visit if those are your thing.
At this time of year allow extra time for driving/busing around if you're visiting the outskirts of York, as we're in the middle of Christmas tourist season, so the roads in and out of the city can be pretty congested.[FONT="][FONT="] Fighting the biggest battle of my life.Started 30th January 2018.

York is a great city and easy to navigate around the main shopping area.
There must be more pubs per square mile in York city centre than any other city, there are so many enchanting pubs, which certainly adds to the charm :-)0 -
I have just been for a couple of days and found the entrance prices exorbitant to be honest. The ticket for York Minster £10 per person, £5pp for the Rail Museum and £7.50 for the Art Gallery. If you have a week in the city then it may be worth spending this sort of price but you would need a day in each venue to make it worthwhile. There is a York pass issued by the tourist office but the winter prices are £38 per person for one day, £50 for two days and £60 for three days. A huge amount for anyone on a low income in my opinion.Solar Suntellite 250 x16 4kW Afore 3600TL dual 2KW E 2KW W no shade, DN15 March 14
