PGCE finance after living abroad

Options
Hi,

I'm a little confused by the regulations regarding temporary residences.

I have been outside the EU for 10 years, apart from a 7 month period in the UK.

All of that time has been with the intention of temporary absence, as follows:

1) 1 year abroad to teach English (intention to return, complete a degree, and then a PGCE)

2) Extended another 18 months - to get married and wait until married long enough to get wife UK visa. - I changed jobs during this time

3) Return UK. Intend work and save 1 year, then go to uni. But earnings so small not really possible as debt was mounting.

4) Return abroad - 6 years (received job offer while still in UK), intention to work and study distance learning. (Again, changed jobs half way in this time)

5) Now, degree almost finished, plan to return and do PGCE.

I cannot possibly afford to pay international fees as well as living costs, so I will be trying to apply as a home student with temporary absences.
I am from Wales, but will likely study in England. All of my work contracts have been 1 year periods.

Does anybody have any advice on how I should go about this? Is my situation likely to be accepted as a home student?

I would really appreciate any insights.

Thank you

I think it's unlikely that you can be considered a home student, and to be honest I hope you aren't, you've been outside the UK for most of the last 10 years without paying anything into the system, and now you want a handout from that system. Hardly seems fair does it?

I suggest you put this question to the DFE team that recruits new teachers. There are various pots of money, some of which depend on your subject and degree class, so even if you don't qualify to be a home student you might still have options.

Also: have you checked out the distance-learning PGCE that the Open University offers?

The OU hasn't offered PGCEs for several years.
