Garage door disaster!

Hi ,

I'm looking for some advice please. My father wasn't managing to open his garage door as it required a two hand action and his mobility is an issue these days. So he decided, the door being unsuitable, he would have a new up and over door fitted.

After looking around he decided on a national company and the rep came out, he chose the door, paid half. The door was made, and a few weeks later they turned up to fit.

It was after 2pm, the fitters had no extension lead and ended up finishing off in the dark using torches. Needless to say the door was fitted incorrectly, they also damaged the garage drilling in three unnecessary places and broke out a drainage channel out width the garage.

They came back and put that lot right, of a fashion, then dad went to put the car away......

The opening has been narrowed due to the gear for the door and the car no longer fits!
He has complained as at no time was he told that the available opening would alter.
What can he do? He's in his eighties and pretty upset.

Thanks

  • how much did it narrow by?
  • Its made to order so chances are consumer rights don't apply in so much as returning it and getting money back.
My dad has a Hormann door and he had it made bigger and fitted it in the garage behind the opening so the opening was not affected.
Contact the firm and complain about it but they may say they can't help.

I can understand that you'd be upset about the fitting of it, but i don't think you'll have much luck getting any action on it making the access smaller.
Maybe the rep should have pointed it out, but would he have known how big the car was that was going in the garage. Unless your Dad had said, i've got such a car, will this be OK.

  • Thanks all. The rep is going out tomorrow to discuss. They were aware space was tight and had stated it wouldn't be a problem. It's around a foot apparently, god knows what they done! I'm a distance away so its pretty frustrating !

Irrespective of what they do or don't do, dad will still have to take steps to remedy this. Possibly another door inside set back as suggested.

    Thanks

The old doors were side-hung? So at a guess there's a framework inside the old doorframe, with the runners and finishing pieces either side of the door opening. Six inches/150mm per side isn't exactly a huge amount for that.

The new up-and-over door cannot possibly be wider than the old one without substantial modifications to the old door frame. So even an inset door is going to be slightly narrower - and I suspect this is the nearest off-the-shelf size. A made-to-measure size would have been substantially more expensive.

Perhaps a roller door would have been/could be the answer? My garage has a very narrow opening but the roller (with remote control) is fitted on the inside so I can still get my car in and out.
