Thank you - some great suggestions there.
It's quite embarassing but although we work together and do loads of chit-chat, I don't really know what her hobbies and interests are. She loves her dogs, and animals in general, is very widely travelled and has a quadraplegic partner, so does a lot for him.
I thought if I got a couple of small crafty type things, then it's not going to be such a drag, feeling she HAS to do it because it was a gift, rather than doing it because she enjoys it.
She is SUCH a lovely lady. Very thoughtful and caring - the first one to buy a card for someone if they are unwell, or feeling down, sending flowers etc. She will be very much missed until she is well enough to come back to us.0 -
How about a selection of ,word search, sudoku, crosswords, puzzle books. I personally don't enjoy them but find them doable if I put my mind to it or unlike me she may enjoy them .
However, I hate hate jigsaws and would not thank you for one.Life is like a bath, the longer you are in it the more wrinkly you become.0 -
If you can, for someone like me who isnt into art, I would try and help them organise something productive if they wanted. I wish I had a better idea as to what - I am struggling to think of that for myself! I need something with a purpose, a target and if possible, a deadline!
How about free online courses?

Stock up on the Shiraz. A glass at lunchtime, a couple of hours kip every day and she'll be feeling better in no time at all.0

Have you asked her what thoughts she's had about filling the time?
Like suejb2, I wouldn't thank you for a jigsaw. Or sudoku. And the two times when I was laid up, about all I could cope with was daytime TV, until I was better enough to start washing and dressing each morning, which took up SO much time and energy there wasn't a lot of time for TV ...
I don't think I'd have thanked you for a crochet kit, never got the hang of that. Probably wouldn't have thanked you for knitting either, although I've started doing it now.
I usually pop a magazine into any goody bags I'm doing.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
If she sends a lot of cards out, and loves animals, she may appreciate a card making kit, as people often make them for animal charities.
Another thing you could do is make an ideas jar. Type out some of the ideas you think she might like, cut them into strips, fold them up and put them in a jar. When she gets bored, she can pick an idea out of the jar, and ok, she might not want to do it, but it could trigger an idea of what she does want to do. You could add a few things such a word searches, or even quizzes that you've downloaded from the internet, to go with the jar. I really do like the idea of the free on-line courses.
If she is as lovely as she sounds, I think she will just be made up that someone is thinking of her, and you can't go far wrong.0 -
As she is so popular at work, could you organize a rota of people to visit her. Spend an hour having a chat over a cup of tea, catching up with the gossip.

Ah thank you, they look good from first browse :j I shall take a proper looksie and find something to engrose myself into.
Re wanting to help out - will she have anyone to walk her dogs for her? if she has a wheelchair for use could someone pop by and take her and the dogs out for a bit?
Otherwise, if she hasnt been able to sort something for the dogs, I think the cinnemon trust do that sort of thing.0 -
I strongly commend cheap sponges, as once allowed crutches, the gentil game of clock golf (with inverted crutch & a sponge) can start.
In which I'm sure her hounds will be all too happy to partake, so get the less expensive sponges, more meteor-like sort, from the pound shops.
Til then definitely teams of visitors to *bring* tea & cake (& do the washing up afterwards), and take the hounds for a walk.
Please suggest she has a dekko both at the competitions boards & the money makeover? It may help take her mind off how long til the next pill, meal, sleep or whatever.0
