Receipts

If I pay a landlord electronically should I ask him for a receipt? What would be the nature of the receipt?

Thanks

If the transaction is registered as a payment to him, wouldn't your receipt for that payment be your bank statement?

do you need a physical receipt for some other purpose?

your proof of payment is your bank statement and the account details to which you sent the payment

Best way to pay your landlord.
Print off copy of bank statement with all payments to Mr X landlord.
You have proof you have paid and the LL can quickly check what rent he has received.
HMRC can also easily check how much income he has received.
Mortgage company can see Income and expenditure !
    Simples really

Errr.... depends what you are paying him for...

If it's the regular monthly rent then your bank records showing how much you paid, when & to which account is enough (in my opinion..)

However if you are paying a holding deposit or initial rent & deposit I would suggest you DO want a receipt (or at least acknowledgement) and documented terms of payment.. e.g. "Rent paid in advance, to be returned to Mr Anon if the tenancy does not commence...."

If it is fees prior to a tenancy definitely agree terms & get receipt.

Have you physically seen the property & seen the landlord? There's a few scammers out there, some even showing a property they don't own...

Yes, I have been to the property and met the landlord.

My tenancy will start on Monday and I will pay rent/bills on this day.

It looks like the bank statement will be sufficient proof of payment.

Best wishes to all who contributed to this thread.
  • Spend £3 with land registry & make sure he is the actual owner,,

And if you pay but then he decides not to go ahead with tenancy, what terms will you have agreed (none..) and how will you get your money bacck (ah, good question...)
