Do a comparison based on UK figures for high users.

This is around 15,000kwh. Average use is around 12,000kwh. Try both even.

Do a comparison for prepay, see if you can compare against your current tariff. That is why it is important to know it. It should be visible on your online account.

Then do a comparison for the same use (15,000kwh) as if you had a standard meter on direct debit. Just pick any tariff to compare against, it is the result that is what you need to look at.

In both cases, compare the predicted annual cost (ignore any supposed savings). Compare the annual cost for your current tariff, the best prepay and the best standard credit meter. Also try looking at separate suppliers. Duel fuel is not always the best.

If you wanted to compare electricity at the same time use the national average figure of 3500kwh to compare.

For example, for both gas and electric @15,00kwh and 3500kwh: (my area)

The best prepay tariff : £1100

The best standard meter tariff: £950

Best standard meter with separate suppliers £900

So that is nearly a £200 saving for being on a credit meter with separate suppliers.

That is comparing against the best prepay tariff, so if you are on a poor tariff for the amount you use, the savings could be even higher!
