Paid for pay and display but parked on a single yellow line!

Hi all,
I had my car for less than a month and I'm not originally from the UK. I have been only here for less than three years for studying, and I know very little about the parking policies.

I had to go to the dental institute of Edinburgh for an appointment and was a bit late, so I hadn't have time to check all street signs. I had paid for the park pay and display, but very sadly parked in the wrong spot. I had parked on a single yellow line, outside the prescribed hours. I honestly thought that the ticket I bought would allow me to park there! Unfortunately, I got a ticket "Parked in a restricted street during prescribed hours".

I paid for the pay and display over the mobile and have the invoice for the same time of the penalty. From Google maps, it looks like there is no sign saying that I can only park on yellow line outside the prescribed hours.

Given this info, would recommend that challenge this penalty or pay the 50% penalty in 14 days? and what would be my strongest point that I could rely on?

Thanks,
Sufyan

Sorry, I don't think it is worth challenging this. The single Yellow Line means parking is prohibited at certain times. The times are always on a sign somewhere nearby. If you park on a yellow line and can't find the sign, you are gambling on whether or not you get a ticket.

I would suggest you revise your knowledge of UK road markings as it may save you more money in the future.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

We always recommend appealing as there's nothing to lose.

However, as we tend to major on private parking tickets here, PePiPoo will be your best bet for council tickets. Register there (but please note that a hotmail address won't work) and post a new thread; here's your link:

    http://forums.pepipoo.com/index.php?act=SF&s=&f=30

Have a read through some of the other threads there before you post your own to get the hang of what information they need from you in your opening post - but as a minimum you will need to post redacted photos/scans of all correspondence you've received from the council (both sides, if appropriate) as they need to see all the small print.

PePiPoo has an excellent success record in dealing with council tickets.
Please note, we are not a legal advice forum. I personally don't get involved in critiquing court case Defences/Witness Statements, so unable to help on that front. Please don't ask. .

I provide only my personal opinion, it is not a legal opinion, it is simply a personal one. I am not a lawyer.

Can you clarify if this is a council or private ticket - who issued it or who does it say to pay to?

If it is the council, then yes Pepipoo is the place to go but if private, get stuck-in to the Newbies Sticky at the top of this forum and post back here for more help.

Even if it is council, it is always worth appealing an Edinburgh ticket - this is one of the authorities who have done the most to treat the motorist/visitor as a cash cow and have gone about it a spectacularly slap-dash manner. Issues of poor/confusing signage, illegal markings, slave-driving their patrollers to meet targets etc are a longstanding matter of record.
  • Many thanks for all of you.

Dear Tacpot12, I had to learn this but it seems that it would cost me 30 quids!!

Dear Umkomaas, many thanks for this reply. I will do as you advised!

Dear pogofish, it's a council ticket. Apologies if the post wasn't clear enough.
    Regards,
    Sufyan.

Always appeal any Council PCN with the help of pepipoo forum. Nothing to lose.
PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).
