Buying my first car

Going to the local car dealerships tomorrow to look for my first car. I have £2.5k cash and an 8 year old vectra to trade.
I've seen a car which I like and it's just under £4k so for me to be able to afford it the garage would have to offer £1.5k (which I don't think they will!)
So has anyone got any tips for haggling on marked price of cars and how to get the best deal? I don't want any finance and know not to disclose I'm a cash buyer until a price has been agreed!
I've tried selling the car privately but given the time of year people are pushed for cash however I do not want to be ripped off. Similar cars to mine are being sold between £2.5k -£3k on the forecourt.

First car but you have a trade in?
If you want to haggle really well dont take a part exhange vehicle the garage doesnt want.
Its just a hassle for them to shift it on.
Not everyone is pushed for cash at Xmas, a lot of people get bonuses at Xmas time and use that for larger purchases.
Dont tell them your a cash buyer? WHY.
I say i have cash now for the right deal...Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Yes we have upgraded the family car so I'm using the old one to trade in. I don't enjoy driving it as find it too big.
How would I know if the garage didn't want it or not?0 -

You go by the best offer they will give you. The best way of looking at it is the cost to change. Don't expect anything in the region of the
forecourt prices you are seeing, however.
Get a we buy any car valuation based on accurate condition and that will give you a lowish trade price.0
