Superdeal Meter Problem

After years of being “lectured” by MSE e-mails and TV shows I finally decided to switch energy supplier. I have been on a 3-meter Superdeal with SSE but on 10 October I joined MSE Cheap Energy Club. Several suppliers showed a saving of £250+ and of these I applied to E.ON as they had the best customer satisfaction score. Unsure about the switch from Superdeal to Economy 7 I wrote to E.ON immediately and 5 days later got confirmation that they would just add the 3 meter readings together to calculate my bill. Fine!
On 16 October E.ON wrote to give a completion date of 3 November and saying they would be in touch. Hearing nothing, I e-mailed them on 10 November and gave “closing readings”. A week later I got a reply saying that the switch was cancelled as they could not support “complex metering”. 5 weeks after saying it was OK!
After this experience, I decided not to go through the switch mill again as I had been out of contract for 5 weeks. I went back to SSE cap-in-hand and signed up with them again on another one year fixed deal. The best laid plans…
When I applied to E.ON I had all my ducks in a row but no one ever mentioned that your type of meter can scupper the switch!

Probably because that isn't the case in nine out of ten situations. When the market was deregulated many years ago a lot of these setups like yours were gradually replaced with either Economy 10 or Economy 7, so the legacy arrangements aren't always supported, and as you've found out a lot of them are still in place.

What probably happened was the meter database was wrong for your property and Eon thought they could deal with it, when it later emerged they actually couldn't.

You probably can move from the Superdeal but it will almost always involve having a new meter (moving to Economy 7) and possibly a spot of rewiring as well.
