My carpets are desperate for a clean. Used a stiff brush and its so ingrained (3 years worth) that I can't get it out.
Do I pay £100 to get carpets cleaned or pay £180 for a carpet cleaner in the hope that I will use it at least twice a year?

You can rent a rugdoctor for about £25 for a day. I did such with our new place, and was happy with the results. Don't bother with their cleaning chemicals, though - that's where they are making most of their money.0

I'd read some reviews about rug doctor, stating the machines are often filthy but I'm wondering whether that's because the only people to review are those who want to complain!!Money money money.

We bought a refurbed Bissell machine off their own website. I think it was about £90 delivered with chemicals. It is brilliant. If I was you I would do that and then sell it on after you've finished.0

We bought a Vax carpet cleaner about 7 years ago. It has had plenty of use due to two house moves and has proved its worth many times over.abby1234519 wrote: »My carpets are desperate for a clean. Used a stiff brush and its so ingrained (3 years worth) that I can't get it out.

We paid about £120 for it which is far less than we would have spent of hiring or getting a firm in.
It is hard work to use but that provides a free workout.0 -
I needed some carpets cleaned so I asked around if any one had a machine I could borrow. I ended up with a Vax from my mother in law, couple of hours work, job done. Try asking first x0
