I think your practice is oput of order, i work in the nhs and have never ever heard of this, i know that sponsores often collect tops for a cause, but if your mum is refered to an occupational therapist or physiotherapist they will assess her for a chair, Your practice has got its wires crossed and you could try reporting them to your local health board for unproffesional behavour and write to your mp.

Please ask your friend to go to the GP to be referred to a wheelchair clinic. Wheelchairs are supplied by the NHS, not the Council.

Users have to be assessed and measured for an appropriate chair. It helps to try as many as possible before going to the clinic to see which are most suitable for needs.

Most NHS clinics operate a voucher scheme. Instead of supplying a wheelchair, they provide a voucher which can be used as payment towards the chair of your choice.

It's no use buying a wheelchair 'off the peg' unless its for short term temprary use. They have to fit properly, be fit for the purpose (eg lightweight to lift in to cars) and may have to have cushioning fitted. Should it be self propelled, attendant propelled or electric?

    Have a look here:

At GHS Recycling in Portsmouth we run a scheme where we will take any amount of milk bottle tops and keep this on file and let you know every 2 months how your total is mounting up. We pay £25 for every 500 kgs on a pro rata basis (minimum payout is on 500 kilos)

At present we have 30 groups across the south of England who are collecting for 16 different charities.

It is a slow process BUT it is another way of being greener and it is something for nothing!!

I know everyone is trying to be helpful by collecting milk bottle tops to pay for a wheelchair but £25 for 500kg  I have estimated that this is about 375000 milk bottle tops for £25. Please read some of the above posts that explains the anyone who needs a wheelchair should be able to get one through wheelchair services.
