How quickly can you make a mobile claim on a Natwest silver account after upgrading?

Hi,

My wife and I upgraded to a Natwest Silver account three days ago. It comes with mobile insurance. As luck (or bad luck however you look at it) would have it, my wife has now damaged her phone. Does anyone know how soon you can claim? We're still in the 14 day cooling off period and haven't had the paperwork through yet - all I can see online in the key facts exclusions is:
Covers up to two claims per
account holder in any 12 month
period – a £75 excess applies for
each claim
• Replacement handsets will be
refurbished phones
• Loss or theft must be reported to
your network provider within 24
hours of discovery for unauthorised
use claims to be considered
• All claims must be reported to the
insurer within 60 days
• We will not pay costs relating to
cosmetic enhancements made
to the phone such as plating or
embellishments
• You must take all reasonable
precautions to prevent loss, theft
or damage
• Cover is for account holders’
phones only. Your phone isn’t
covered if it’s being used by
someone else such as a friend or
your child, even if you’ve given
them permission to use it

It details how to make a claim and how soon after theft is discovered, but not how long after you've started.

Does anyone know?!

Thanks in advance

If there's no exclusion period mentioned then I would assume you're covered from when you sign up to the product.

Similarly if you pay for car insurance and crash an hour later, you'd be insured for the accident.
  • cool, thanks

thing is it also states that:

There are a number of exclusions and

    limitations in your policy. Significant

or unusual ones are shown below. Full

details can be found under the “What

is not covered” heading in Sections 6

and 7, as well as the General Conditions

and General Exclusions sections of your

    Mobile Phone Insurance Terms.

But I don't have these yet - they are being posted! Where do I stand on that...?
  • you stand guessing until you know the conditions!
Mr Generous - Landlord for more than 10 years. Generous? - Possibly but sarcastic more likely.
  • Don't be surprised if NatWest don't believe the damage wasn't pre-existing when you upgraded the account. I certainly don't. Not sure how strict they are with these things though.
  • Thanks SuperAlly

I wish it wasn't true - we took the policy out as it gives you a taste card which will be really useful as we're having our kitchen replaced and holiday insurance which we'll also need. I've never used mobile insurance in my life - that's why I don't know how it works!

I did this not long ago. Upgraded to platinum for the phone insurance and the worldwide travel insurance. Made a claim 72hrs after receiving confirmation of upgrade, new phone arrived 24hrs later. It shouldn't be a problem for you.
  • There's no obvious exclusion on their web site.

    I think you're covered.
  • Thanks for the advice - I suppose it cant hurt to try anyway, I just thought if there was a period where you cant claim then trying to claim in that time might cause issues later on. But I guess they'll just say no!

On side note, do you get the broken phone back? I have no idea how to transfer the data from it to the replacement one!
