Adverse Credit Bank Accounts

Can anyone tell me where I can get a bank account? I have a protected trust deed and obviously am finding it difficult to get a current account. Don't want any bells and whistles-just a debit card and a cheque book. I went 59p overdrawn with my current bank yesterday, and they are going to charge me £35!
Anyone have any solutions please?

A few good ones to try are Co-op. Nationwide and Natwest Step account, you need to ensure you explain that you want the basic bank acount, you are unlikely to get a cheque book with any of the basic bank accounts I'm afraid.

  • Thanks for that!
Can these be applied for online?
  • s.gifs.gifs.gifThank you for applying for the following product: CURRENT ACCOUNT
Unfortunately your application has been declined
    Bankruptcy

When we were processing your application we performed our standard searches, and found Bankruptcy information registered in your name. Unfortunately we're not able to open accounts where this is the case, until we see confirmation that the Bankruptcy Order has been officially discharged.
If you can supply us with confirmation that the Bankruptcy Order has been discharged, we will proceed with the application for a basic bank account. This confirmation can be obtained by contacting the Accountant in Bankruptcy (Scotland) and the appointed Trustee in Bankruptcy (England & Wales).
Please call into the Branch should you be in a position to supply this information as this may enable us to take your application forward.

I had that from Nat West when OH and I applied for a joint step account. Yet neither he or I have ever been bankrupt! We even chased it at the insolvency service and there is no record of either of us ever having filing or having bankrupcy filed against us. We haven't even got an IVA.

If you have been bankrupt and are now discharged all they require is sight of your discharge certificate (which can be obtained from the court) in the branch. Then your account application will be processed and a Step Account can be opened. HTH.
  • I have a Protected Trust deed (I am in Scotland) which is the same as an english IVA. It is not discharged, it is still current.

A search of the Register of Insolvencies shows both Bankruptcy and Protected Trust Deeds in Scotland. Also the Edinburgh Gazette and Gazette online can be checked by the banks and details of Bankruptcy and Protected Trust Deeds are shown there.

Clydesdale Bank do a Bankruptcy check but I'm not sure what they would do with a Protected Trust Deed. I'd ask for a basic account and see what happens.

I don't think there is any chance of you getting a cheque book. If you have a cheque book and debit card with your current bank I would try and stick with it so that when your Trust Deed ends you have proof that it has been completed and a length of banking history with the same bank. It might be easier for you to move accounts with both of these things in place.

Have a look at the table included in this booklet about Basic Bank accounts.

You don't get a cheque book with these accounts but many people hardly ever write one now..

The Bankruptcy & Living With It board has a sticky entitled Bank accounts for Bankrupts.

A TD in Scotland is not treated quite as harshly by the banks, but it's not too far off.

Have a good read through the 'basic bank account' factsheet linked to by gt94sss2.

EDIT: NastyWest don't like any type of insolvency so I really wouldn't bother with them.
