A dreadful piece of work, from the joints, to the pooling, to the lack of detail and upstand where it meets the tiles, to the distorted tiles, to the hip detail to...you will get the idea.

It is an ideal squirrel scenario, but also for mice, rats and birds. Any could walk across the flat roof and get under the tiles. I say this because the detailing here is wrong, and I doubt there is any barrier fixed to prevent this.

Being woken at 5.00 could be birds walking on the roof. If you consider a Magpie (which we plenty of where I live), or Gulls, these are big birds. With the Magpies my fence shakes, and roof tiles create a thud, when they land. Similarly your flat roof will give a thud.
