Restoring Marble fireplace

I moved into a flat which has a few original fireplaces. The main one is black marble, but there's some streaks over it. I guess someone in the past has used an unsuitable cleaner on it which has stained the marble.
Does anyone know any products which might restore the marble and remove these streaks?
Thanks very much!

Could be that they have etched the marble with an acidic cleaner...
You could try a product called renue http://www.trades-direct.co.uk/modules/shop/view.asp?Prodcode=100293
Followed by brilliance http://www.trades-direct.co.uk/modules/shop/view.asp?Prodcode=100460
Have done a few repairs with this stuff and it works well

I use jewellers rouge for small marks on marble, glass etc., but thanks to tile guru I'll look out for the product he/she recommends.0
