The thing about Google maps is it doesn't show the speed limits which I think is a must for me.
Even if your sat-nav does show speed limits you can't really rely on that info in case the data is incorrect. It is much better to be aware of what the speed limit is from the road signs.

I have a TomTom GO 6100 with 'free for life' map and traffic camera updates which I find excellent.

Even if you don't own a TomTom the TomTom MyDrive live traffic map is very useful.

If you've got a decent sized smartphone, have you considered using that with Google Maps' navigator? It does everything I need it to and is very good for finding specific locations, venues etc. if they already have a presence on Google.

I'm not sure how it does for traffic information - not something I've looked into, but I don't need to use it often enough.

Google maps does inform you of any delays on your route eg lane closed on the motorway via voice and it shows you any roadworks on the route (can be hit and miss as I didnt see any r/works earlier today.

The Go Pilot phone app does speed limits.

Shouldnt really rely on it to tell you the limits, just use the signs

Yes my Garmin cannot be relied on for speed limits and is wrong perhaps 10% of the time, but the warning chime is still a useful reminder sometimes.
  • A good smart phone, google drive and the free tom tom speed cameras app running in the background and you have a great system.
