Possibly a stupid question...
Hello,
Wondering if anyone can help; we've just moved into our first property and trying to estimate our gas/electric usage. Over the course of 11 days we've used:
150kwh of electric
34kwh of gas
If i'm estimating, should I divide these by the 11 days then x by 365 days?
4964kwh elec p.a
1197kwh gas p.a
Do those estimates sound reasonable for a 2bed house? 2 adults 1child?
Thankyou in advance and apologies!

34 kWhs of gas? Are you just reading the meter? If so, and its metric, then you need to multiply the daily meter reading by 11.2 to convert cubic metres to kWhs. For gas, you will use 70% of your annual consumption over the Winter months and 30% during Spring to Autumn. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Oh my bad, I had just read the meter. In that case it looks like it works out at 12,264 p.a.
Do these figures seem average for a 2 bed house?
I literally have no idea *face palm*
Thankyou!0 -
Don't feel bad. - we all have to learn. I suspect that your gas consumption will be less than 12,000kWhs/year. Our gas usage for water heating and cooking when the CH is turned off ( May to September) is about 1 cubic metre a day/11kWhs.
Provide your supplier with monthly meter readings to prevent any bill shocks. The bill will show estimated annual usage based on the actual meter readings that you provide. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Thankyou Hengus...I've just been and inspected the boiler and found out that we've had the CH 'ON' 24/7 for the past 11 days so have adjusted the timer, wondering if that may have increased our gas consumption.
I'm concerned that our electric usage is high? My partner leaves his computer 'on' 24/7. Would this effect it much?
Thanks,

Electricity is a variable feast as it depends on the age of appliances, usage, lighting etc.Your usage figure is on the high side. We use about 7kWhs/day but we do have PV Solar which reduces our usage off the grid by about 1000kWhs per year.
I would look at replacing lighting in high usage rooms with LED bulbs: there is little point in doing so in rooms that are rarely used. I would also pop down to the library and see whether they offer the loan of an energy saving kit which you can play around with to check the consumption of each of your appliances. Do you have an electric shower: this is a big user of electricity?
FWiW, I leave my Mac on all the time. There is no doubt that it does use energy even when in sleeping mode.
Once again, I suspect that your projected annual electricity usage figure is also on the high side as darker nights require more lighting. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
