Eon smart meters
Hi
Had these installed just over a year ago then moved to British Gas. Lost smart function as expected but moved back to Eon recently. Was told all along that smart functionality will return but not I've been advised that the move away kills off smart functionality permanently and have to have new meters fitted! These first wave meters really are a waste of money for suppliers to install.
Has anyone else had this issue?

Hello Stuorr and welcome to the Forums.
Sounds like you've an earlier version of our smart meters. With these, once smart features have been lost following a change of supplier, they can't be restored when the account switches back. Here, the meter will work as a conventional or dumb type and will need to be read manually. Also, the Energy Display that comes with the meters won't show usage in pounds and pence. They will, though, give this in kWh.
Along with the other suppliers, we're working to fix this so later meters don't lose smart features following a change of supplier. This isn't much help now, I know, as it's not possible to update your existing meter but you can register for a newer version through our website. We'll be in touch to let you know what we can do.
Sorry I can't offer anything more positive Stuorr.

Ok thanks for the confirmation. I'm down to get a replacement next month. Would you think this one would be more future proof than my last one?
Thanks0 -
Last week my eon monitor just started displayed dashes. tried switching off and on, its well within the 30 m stipulated (next room) and not being moved at all. Called eon Wednesday, 30 mins on hold and when finally got to speak to someone was told plug it in next to meter and would resolve it. Was sceptical and person said tr hey would call back Thursday am on my mobile that I provided in case it didn't work.
Well it didn't work, displayed 0 for 24 hours now back to dashes and only seems to pick up electricity and not gas going by icons at top of display. But the eon person did not call back as promised.
Just called again and after 20 mins on hold someone picked up and promptly cut me off. So have called back and still on hold yet again as I type.

You're welcome Stuorr. Happy to help.
Yes, I would. Smart meters have moved on and we, like all suppliers are looking to use a centralised database. This is the Data Communications Company (DCC) and they'll look after the Smart network for all suppliers. They'll pass meter readings to the current supplier. Not sure when this will be in place. The aim is for customers to be able to switch supplier without losing smart capability. To help with this, we're also looking at a new type of smart meter.
Hope this helps and all goes well when your new smart meter is installed. Thanks, too, for your patience Stuorr.

Hello Spooky_uk and sorry for the late reply. Sorry, too, for the difficulties you've been having with your smart meter display and in trying to talk to us about it. Did you eventually manage to speak to us and has this been sorted?
If not, best to talk to our Smart Meter specialists. Contact details will be on bills, our website and the documents left when the meters were installed. There's also information on our website about these displays that might help. If they can't sort the problem, they'll look at sorting out a replacement.
Sorry again for the issues you've had Spooky_uk.
