Santander debit letter

I switched my bank from Santander to Barclays, all went smoothly, I received update letters as things were being done by Barclays. Apart from a letter telling me they had received a request to change to Barclays I heard nothing from Santander. Until one day I did revceive a letter from Santander telling me that they can't close the account as it is debit ! It was in credit, by a nice amount, but now I owe Santander over £64 !
How ? Surely the account was closed and they should have forwarded any requests for payment to Barclays ? They paid something, from a closed account with no money in it at all, and now I owe Santander ?
They say I need to make a payment in branch (the reason I changed banks is because the road Santander is located on is now a pedestrian area and as I am disabled I cannot walk the distance from the road to the bank, or, send a cheque - I do not have a cheque book , I am not to make an electronic payment a the account is closed.
Is this normal ? Surely if an account is closed they can't pay anything with non existent money ?

Santander can give you an account number to send the payment to, if they won't do this, call Barclays and ask their switching team to call them for you. You can send an electronic payment, you just need the correct account number from Santander. You can't send an electronic payment to your old account but they will have suspense accounts which will accept the payment and then they can move it to your old account to repay the debit balance.0

I agree with Norscbu, you need to speak to Santander to find out what's happened. If it turns out that you do owe the money then they should be able to take a debit card payment from your new Barclays account over the phone.0
