Are you prepared?

  • When we bought our car 3 months ago, it came with a pretty decent emergency kit-
    Wind up torch
    First aid kit
    High-vis jacket

We'll usually keep about £50 in a cash in the house - usually from the kids birthdays when we've forgotten to cash it. There is a cash machine 2 minutes walk away, but i have experienced my card's IT system being down - so I've got a debit and credit card from different banks.

We've got a few torches and candles for power-outages. There's a gas fire in the lounge which will keep us warm if the rest of the central heating system packs in...

I think we're as prepared as we need to be, for natural-disaster-proof Britain

Always have £100 in the house and £20 in my phone case and hidden pocket of my wallet. Plenty candles and matches. Two big bottles of water that get changed every year or so. Tinned food and basic cold remedies etc get stocked up at the start of the winter in case of ill health or icy roads. My main worry is heating as I am all electric so have a small camping stove and a hot water bottle at the ready.

So far I've never needed any of it ....

All bills are on direct debit. I tend to pay for everything by card. I do keep a small amount of cash in the house to cover cab fares incase of emergency or car breaking down. Have made a point of befriending my closest neighbours. They are a wonderful lifeline if ever there is an emergency. Feel very fortunate to live close to such nice people
The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own, no apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on or blame. The gift is yours - it is an amazing journey - and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins.

Minimum of £20 in a secret location in the house. Just checked and there's £56 in there.

Credit card with at least £1k available to spend on it. Currently has £1700 available.

Enough food in to get us through a couple of weeks if needs be.

    All the medical basics.
  • I like to be prepared.

I usually carry about £30 cash.

I have £20 in a waterproof holder in the car. Very handy for takeaways.

In the house I have £200 in cash notes and £100 in coins in a Coke can. I also have 20g of gold in certified packages (worth about £500) useful in case of any currency crisis.

I have an "emergency" credit card with a £13k limit for any emergencies that might require international travel / leaving the country.

I have 2 water purification systems (main and backup) capable of producing approx 10,000 litres of pure water per day if required. (These were given to me by a friend)

I don't have a diesel generator, but I do have an inverter that would allow me to run mains appliances from the car or other vehicle.

I am not prepared for flooding though (which is probably a bigger risk than a currency crisis!) so I have some work to do.

On holiday a few years back, m'wife got caught out when the ATM network failed - since then we have both carried cards from 2 different banking groups (actually I have 3) and at least £20 in cash. There's £50 of joint account money hidden in the house. 5 litres of bottled water, matches, candles and wind-up torch where we can get at them. Suburban South London doesn't really require any more advanced preparation.
I need to think of something new here...
