Barclarycard increase credit limit process

I have a Barclaycard and may need to put a large set of expenses on it, I've noticed there is an option to increase the credit limit on the card but there's not much detail on how long the process takes and any negative effects. I'm wondering if anyone has done this recently and how they got on, I realise there's a lot of variables involved and it may be entirely different to me but I'd still be interested to hear how it went.

Alternatively, are there any issues with immediately paying down the balance after I put the purchases on the credit card? I've seen warnings about not putting the account into credit but wondering if as long as I pay when the transaction shows, it's ok.

Apply for the credit limit increase. See what happens.
Why do you want to make purchases on the card and then immediately repay them?

I have to make the purchase on the credit card for various reasons but it puts me close to my credit limit so I'd prefer to then clear the payments as quickly as possible to free up the credit card as I don't want to use the debit card abroad.

Put in a mad limit and see what happens. I've had an account for ten years plus, I had a limit of £3800. I thought I'd try my luck and see what happened, I put in for £12,000 and Barclaycard gave me an immediate limit increase to £11,000. Did show up on credit report as an administrative review a couple of months later.

Thanks for the information, that's exactly what I was looking for.

  • Its pretty straightforward. You put the limit you want, if they are happy with it they will aprove, if they can only offer you a lower limit they will. It seems it is kind of pre-approved on their system. I believe it says there that there is no credit check, so it is almost risk free. If its a yes, you are happy, if its a no, absolutelly no harm done. If its is a yes, the new limit normally gets applied straight away.

I gave it a go and put in a higher limit and after it asked me a couple of questions then gave me the increase so all good.

    Thanks again for the replies.
