Firstly, you waste paint because the plaster literally sucks the moisture out of it, meaning you use more than needed.

And there is a high risk that it forms a skin and does not adhere properly. It bubbles, lifts or peels off. It may not be a problem initially but it can be a problem later when you decorate again.

The firm that did my bathroom told me that the walls could be painted x days later (after plastering).

    They lied.

I had them do the painting that x days later (and certainly didnt see any sign of them doing a mist coat first before the "proper" paint). Some of the paint has peeled off since then. So they will be putting me through the hassle and expense of redecorating again quite some years before it should be necessary. I shall employ someone else to do the decorating this time.

    Not best pleased.....

Based on that and the experience of a friend here that had her bathrooms done by a different firm - and the same thing has happened to her - I would say a mist coat is necessary.

What I don't know is whether I get the (different) decorator I will be employing for it to do a mist coat or no before he does the "proper" coats.
  • I'm sure this has been said before but it does make you wonder when you see the blokes on DIY SOS doing up a house, skim plastered and fully decorated in a couple of days. Presumably they are using some kind of breathable paint?

There's all sorts of wondrous paint available; paint that avoids misting, one-coat paint, non-drip paint, etcetera. It's almost all rubbish and a complete waste of money.

Some cheap watered matt is quick to apply and gets the job done properly.

So good, you need thanking more than once!

    Or making good TV?

We've been offered a TV gig and the budget is laughable.
