Direct credit card purchase - but transaction sent via paypal

I recently paid for a service using my Credit Card and then received the invoice from Pay Pal. I have a dispute with the service as it is inadequate and have asked for a full refund. The company whom I purchased this service is refusing to acknowledge any of my correspondence. Who is responsible for the refund - My Credit Card company (MBNA) or Pay Pal? I do not have an account with Pay Pal and I thought this purchase was direct via the credit card.

Section 75 protection makes a credit card company equally liable as the supplier of goods or services if you pay directly, assuming the transaction value is over £100, etc. That doesn't automatically make them responsible for a refund as such, it just means you have the same rights against them as you do with the supplier and still have to go through the process of demonstrating that you didn't get what you paid for.
However, the PayPal angle is likely to complicate matters, even if you weren't aware of it - does your credit card statement entry say that the transaction was with PayPal? If so, then I suspect you're stuffed, but if it's recorded with your card provider as being with the actual service supplier then you'll have a better chance of making a s75 claim stick.0
