Painting/wallpapering question

Options
We have stripped the paper off the walls in a room we're decorating and underneath there is a layer of old paint painted straight onto the plaster. There was obviously another layer of wallpaper on before the previous occupants put up the wallpaper we have just taken off. They didn't do a very good job of removing it meaning that there are lots and lots of small areas where the coat of paint on the plaster has come off. The plaster itself seems ok.

What's the best way to paint over this? We were hoping to paint straight over it but we think you might be able to see the pattern of the areas where the old paint has come off through the new coat(s).

Are you saying there is still patches of the old paint mixed in with the bare plaster showing?

Is there any chance of showing a pic, as I dont want to give you the wrong advice.

I think I know what you mean, I did try and find another post that had similar problem to you, and I showed pics asking if it was like that, went back to find it, but pics have disappeared.

I am on my to work in a mo, so I will try and upload them this evening after work, if you can manage to take a pic that would be very helpful.:D
  • The walls here where painted straight on to plaster(1935 property)and then wallpapered several times...having stripped off the paper we had to sand the walls to get rid of the paint because otherwise it will always look a bit tatty. Sanding walls, wear a mask and cover everything that you can...horrible job but worth it for the finish to look good. Mrs Happy
  • Ok thanks, I'll try and get a pic up when I'm back from work tonight.
  • I have a similar situation - a patchwork of half paint, half bare plaster. My question is, do I have to sand (messy) or is there an alternative way to strip the paint that might work better?
    Thanks,
    :)

Is it similar to this?, the white bits is the old paint, and the pink bits is the old plaster.

  • Exactly as a room in my house was.

I stripped the paper fully - scraped off any flaking paint - then sanded over the whole wall - getting off what i could then smoothing the edges of any remaining paint.

Then sugar soaped the walls. Then i applied a coat of base paint - two coats of normal emulsion and you are none the wiser of the previous problems
