Insurance cancelled

My husband insured his car with go skippy on his provisional license. They asked us for the date he got his licence... we put in the date on the front of the card. They then asked us to send a copy of his provisional licence. We sent this over and they cancelled his insurance. Apparently the date of issue is not the date he got his licence there are two dates on the card. We changed his licence when we moved address. There was nowhere this was made clear that date of issue is different to date he got his licence.
We then had to pay over the odds because there are very few insurance companies that would insure him with a cancelled policy.
We have just looked at insuring him for a full licence and it's a ridiculous amount, all because he had the policy cancelled which wasn't his fault in the first place.
Is there anything we can do???
Please help!!!!

Although this looks cut and dried he has nothing to lose by complaining to them that the cancellation is harsh as he made a genuine mistake and didn't set out to deceive.
A cancellation is bad news and stays on your record for ever.
Currently direct line do only require notification of cancelled policies in the last 5 years for motor insurance, so check them out in 5 years time and see if they still do that.0 -
Can't see how it is cut and dried without understanding what the difference in the dates are. Perhaps the OP could clarify.
Would the insurer have declined to offer the policy with the real date, or would the policy just have been more expensive?
Worth going through the complaint process and FOS if there has been an innocent error. Nothing to lose and a whole lot to gain.Mr Straw described whiplash as "not so much an injury, more a profitable invention of the human imagination—undiagnosable except by third-rate doctors in the pay of the claims management companies or personal injury lawyers"0 -

We've had this debate before. It doesn't. It's available in a BB database for five years.0 -
Irrespective of how a cancellation is recorded on any database, the question normally asked when applying for cover is along the lines "has anyone to be covered by the policy ever had a policy cancelled by their insurer.......?"
Which is why a cancellation is bad news!0 -
The increased premium for a full licence holder will mostly be because he has only just passed and will probably have zero no claims. Until he earns some then its going to be expensive.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0

The premium will increase when he passes, that's normal.
In respect of the cancellation we would need to know the dates. Some insurers take issue with provisional holders who have held said licence for more than 2 years (an assumption that they haven't drove recently or are not good enough to pass I guess). If the issue date was less than 2 years but the date acquired was over 2 years, there may lie your issue.0 -
I have had a full licence since 1973- as shown on the paper part no longer needed- but changed my address in 2007 and my plastic card shows valid from 2017 until 2017 on the front.
The valid from date is shown on the back of the card as 19730
