Settled claim without my knowledge

Hello

I have recently tried to renew my car insurance policy and the auto renewal quote had came out so expensive. During this process I have discovered my insurance company have settled a claim without my knowledge. This claim involved a person saying that I'd hit his van whilst it was parked. I returned to the car park and a person was waiting for me and accused me of hitting his car. I called the police as the person was quite irate. I sat in the police car and explained what had happened. I called my insurance company and explained what had happened the next day. There was obviously no damage to my car as the incident had'nt happened. As far as I was concerned I forgot all about it as I'd assumed it was a scam. I never heard anymore about it.
I have now contacted my insurance company and they have told me they settled the claim on a without prejudice basis as they had written to me and had no response. I did not get a letter from them and I cant understand why they had;nt tried harder to contact me as they would have done if they wanted money in particular email.
Further to this they have told me the claimant informed them that I was a drunk driver and I was arrested. This absolutely did not happen. Also they have said they have no record of my phone call to them reporting the accident.
I am at at a loss of what to do here, is there anyone that can help with some advice.

If your insurers really believed this they wouldn't have auto-renewed your insurance without further details.

Speak to a supervisor at your insurers - don't be fobbed off with 'the computer says'.
  • Well exactly, I'm waiting for a complaints handler to call me now, but I'm not really sure what my rights are here.
