Insuring 2 vehicles owned by myself

I am self employed and own and insure a van. My wife recently got a new car and insured it in her own name as she has done for years. I got her old Fiesta as a run around and tried to insure it with BSL who are my van insurers. They treated it as a new quote due to the fact I had gone through a comparison website as advised by MSE. I have protected NCD of 9 years yet they say that can only be applied to one vehicle and quoted me over £1000 for a 13 year old Fiesta which is probably worth only £500 or thereabouts. I am a 53 year old driver with 28 years of driving under my belt. Is there any way to get the 9 years NCD applied to both vehicles to bring the quote down?

  • Hi Mike, BSL are technically correct that NCD only applies to one vehicle. However assuming you have a claim free record a good broker should get the price down significantly. Are there any other drivers on the quotes you're doing (aside from you and your wife) as this could affect insurers views on who is the main driver
  • Hi Mike
As above you've earned that NCB on one car and it can only be used on one car.

However, a lot of brokers have schemes where they can mirror the NCB from one car to another. Most will say you have to have both cars with them for that to apply. In my mind that's fair cop. Once you've done a year of this, the NCB proof should be transferable as normal NCB would be.

Unless someone on here can recommend/suggest any of these brokers, I suggest you key in your details online as if you have the max NCB, then start calling the top quotes and ask them if they will mirror existing NCB and let you have the 9 years twice.

Google "mirror ncd car insurance" to find brokers who do this

That's interesting. Does that mean that if you insured two cars then had a claim on one car, the NCB is not affected on the other one??

Each policy builds up its own NCD.

A fault claim only affects the NCD on the policy that was claimed against.

(You might consider protecting your 9 years NCD so that a fault claim won't cause any loss of NCD)
  • The NCB won't be affected, but you'll have to declare the claim on both policies.

Interesting, I'm insured on two cars through L:V (Liverpool Victoria) and have the same NCD on both cars, although I have only owned one of them for three years.

  • Thanks for all the info. Didn't know about mirroring my ncd. Will try that later. Just have to speak to Hastings Van Direct now as they cancelled my insurance because I forgot to mention that I had a windscreen replaced during the year. Totally slipped my mind as I didn't think it was an accident and considering I paid probably for more than half of it anyway it didn't cost my insurance a lot of money. They only gave me a few days notice to find another insurance company and stung me for a few quid to cancel it. Hope their complaints dept are in a generous mood this afternoon!

You now have a much bigger problem than getting your ncd mirrored.

Your cancelled policy remains on your record for ever more and must be disclosed to other insurers you go go for all your vehicles (and any you are s named driver on a policy). Meaning getting cover is now going to be difficult and expensive

If it were a standard car policy there are insurers that will mirror the no claims, but being a van that may not work.

Mate transferred his cars no claims to a van and couldnt find any insurer that would swap it back.
