Hi,
I've had a quote to lay laminate flooring in two rooms (room sizes below). Quote was £420, does this sound ok? I am in south Manchester
Room 1 - 4.1m x 3.5m
Room 2 - 4.1m x 3.4m
I already have flooring and underlay

Laying flooring is pretty easy - you could save yourself a chunk of cash and have a go.
Get a couple of other quotes, it's not too high but I think you could get it done cheaper.Thinking critically since 1996....0 -

What are they doing with skirting boards (where the laminate meets the wall)?0 -

I have had another quote for £270 which sounds a bit more reasonable. Could you advise on what I should be asking them re the skirting boards? Cheers0 -
How they plan to deal with it. Ideally they take it off and put it back on with the floor underneath - this is the best way but messy and costs more as more time consuming. The alternative is to use beading - some like this and some don't. It's quicker and cheaper.Thinking critically since 1996....0

its around 1.5days job with all finishing and re-doing the skirting.
You can save yourself the £300 and do it yourself, even a pensioneer women with no DIY skills can do that stuff..you must be pretty pathetic not to do it yourself...0 -

A bit harsh - a lot of people are not suited to DIY and would rather pay a "professional"
Plus you ideally need a jigsaw and maybe a chopsaw too.
My similar rooms, took me about a day each when I factor in walking to the shed and back and having tea breaks.
As others have said - its very important to understand how they are finishing around the edges - and maybe have the quote in writing with that detail on. If you're left with big gaps around door frames, chunks out where radiator pipes are and irregular gaps around skirting I dont think you'd be happy afterwards.0 -
you don't need a chopsaw, but you do need a jigsaw.
what's next, you will soon need to pay a ''professional'' to go to toilet for you as well?
I agree some jobs clearly aren't for people who have never done anything themselves before, however laying laminate isn't one of those jobs...0 -

I guess you haven't tried to lay flooring with a bad back, or knees, or arthritis.
Its easy to spout off if you don't consider not everyone is as able as you (and I) are.
The OP was asking for advice about a quote, not a ticking off for not trying hard enough.0 -

You don't need a jigsaw to lay laminate.
