you asked ...essential in all cases, or sometimes a waste of time and money?
I stated that a BTL investor should be able to do their own survey of a standard similar to a homebuyers one and therefore survey is a) essential and b) a waste of money if paid for to that standard. This a money saving website so DIY is best, that is the answer to your question.I'm sure your advice is meant kindly, but I was really after more practical comments such as others have posted.
so you have followed my practical advice and done your own survey which has directly informed your decision...case closed.Having now viewed the property I've decided not to go ahead with it, as the building raised too many question marks with me, and I'm sure more straightforward properties will be available.0
