Ecube for your fridge

Options
Hi,

apologies if this has been asked before, I did do a search but didn't find anything sooo....

Has anyone bought an Ecube for their fridge? I read about it from the free green ebook someone posted about here. It costs £25 but supposedly saves energy your fridge would use. I just wondered if anyone has actually used one and whether it is worth investing the £25 in? It's a lot of money to me but I might consider it if it is really worth it.

Thanks!

  • They reckon to save around 30% on energy. So I guess the first step in 'value for money' is to work out how much of your electricity per year is spent on your 'fridge.

I'm not convinced about their safety - I'm wondering how a solid lump of wax can simulate thinkly sliced meat or cooked rice for example?

But I'm not scientist, so I look forward to being enlightened on this thread.

Its probably another green bandwagon gadget.
  • Let face it. If it genuinely worked, surely some fridge manufacturers would fit it as standard..?

Why don't any fridge manufactuer's fit these things..discuss....

    ..............because they are total biglocks.

Now I've got this magnet that you fit around the fuel line on the car, it aligns the molecules in the fuel leading to improved fuel consumption.:rotfl:
That gum you like is coming back in style.

I only open my fridge max twice a day
To take out cheese, then put it back when I've made a sandwich
And I don't have a cheese sandwich every day.

Only other thing in my fridge is canned drinks, and I tend to take one of those out when I open the door to get the cheese ... and spot one.

The article does say it's not likely to be a big winner in the home.

For those of you with space in your fridge, then why not re-use that polystyrene packaging- it's hard to recycle after all.

Put blocks of it in your fridge or freezer where the gaps are biggest.

It's the cold falling out when you open the door that wastes electricity, most fridges are pretty well insulated once the door is closed.
Take away some of the empty space and less 'cold' will fall out.;)

Obviously you need to leave room for cool air to circulate round your other stuff, so don't fill the fridge with the polystyrene. HTH, it's free at least!

Of course storing your empty tupperware tubs will do the same thing, and look less wierd if your family think your over the top green/MSE:D .

Why don't fridge manufacturers fit doors to the shelves. My freezer has two drawers and two shelves with doors, hinges at the bottom.

If fridges had these it would stop most of the cold air falling out. Transparent plastic doors and glass shelves would keep most of the cold air in the fridge.

Just had an idea! Cling film wrapped around the wire shelves and some sort of thick polythene drapped down to form doors would work.

Yes but I keep more than butter in my fridge, I'd need a lot of pots, and most of them would need to be very odd shapes!

Having said that I remember living in a house, when I was very young, with no fridge. Just a larder with a very thick stone shelves. My parents seemed to manage ok.
