I'd imagine that any self-catering accom that is available over Xmas/New Year was booked up months ago.You still haven't said whether you want a hotel, self catering, caravan etc...
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Airbnb is worth a look. Rooms, apartments, lodges all kinds of accomadation
If you do decide to book with them make sure you get a referral from an existing user and you will get £20 off your first booking (and they benefit too). If you don't know anyone who can help with a code I can help with one but if you ask around you should find someone you know.

If you were thinking of a city escape then I know there are a few events in the new year that would suit couples and families looking for something different to do. Is London of interest?

January is the best time to visit the capital city, especially if you are doing so on a budget. You can get last minute cheap accommodation and enjoy the sales in the shops. For something completely different you could enjoy 40% off London Boat show tickets with Marine Super Store (http://www.marinesuperstore.com/london-boat-show) I've heard it's meant to be a big event with loads of exhibitors, a fun day out for most i'd imagine?

A break from the shops too.

Sykes Cottages have a place in
    Shrewsbury for £311
    Pencader for £314
    Hay-on-Wye £326
    Bridlington £330
Only a quick look and all available but you don't give a budget.

Coach trips, you get brilliant prices and don't have to actually go on the coach, just meet around the hotel. David Urqhat, National holidays etc. You can join in on their excursions too
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
