  • Perhaps if we renamed MMR as 'Organic MMR' then all would be fine? ;)
  • As if there isnt enough worrying conspiracy theories for parents about to give their children MMR:eek: .
  • Don't attack Deals - to ask questions is a sign of not being part of the herd mindlessly following.

The only question that i would have about talking vaccinating through with my GP is that under the old pay structure they received bonuses if they could get a certain take up of vaccination - am not sure if that is still the case with new structure, but would be very surprised if it wasn't.

I don't see anyone attacking Deals, and I agree that in order to make an informed decision you need to ask for the information. What I do see, however, is people rubbishing the information which Deals has been given, generally with a very good reason.

I can see your point about being concerned that the bonus given to your GP (although I have no idea whether vaccination uptake bonuses still exist under the new contracts either) might influence their desire to push for the vaccine. However, you have to consider that alongside two other pieces of information:

    1) The incentive, if it still exists, is given by the NHS to promote vaccination. The NHS does not promote treatments, vaccinations or tests without good evidence that it would be in the best interests of the patient and the NHS as a whole.

    2) Your GP may get a financial bonus from the NHS for getting a high percentage of their patients to undergo vaccination. This is likely to be peanuts in comparison to the charges they would earn for prescribing and administering the three single vaccinations for your child on a private patient basis.

Or made the syringes smell nice and call it Immuno-aroma therapy. :D
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

I think you're on to a money spinner there! :D
  • I wasnt attacking Deals  quite the contrary I feel sorry for anyone who is getting ready for their child to have their first MMR jab it was bad enough when I first went with my child. let alone now with the ill advised information that is being put out now to worry parents even more! I am quite upset to think that anyone would think I would rubbish someone elses concerns.

attacked for asking questions. i think asking questions and making people aware is a way of learning and should not be frowned about. i may not have expressed it in the best of ways as i was in a rush at the time but basically we had the single jab done by a very pleasant GP who also works in the NHS. i mentioned that our daughter had ezema so the jab that contained no milk protein would be best. then he told us briefly how the jab had been cultured so my partner then said so "it would not rule the possibility of it being infected by Aids" or "bird flu" and the doctor told us no could not rule out but more chances of getting serious illness if we did not vaccinate. i dont see anything wrong and i dont understand why there is so much fuss over this.

Not sure if GPs get a bonus for meeting government standards on uptake anymore. But think about it. The reason the incentives are given by the DoH to try to increase the uptake of the vaccine. What reason would they have to do this? The altruistic would say to decrease the incidence of these severe and dangerous childhood infections. The cynical would say that it costs less in the long run to immunise than to treat the children later on, especially those left permanently brain damaged by measles (a condition called "subacute sclerosing panencephalitis"). In any case, the reason is because for a vaccine to actually be effective it has to have a certain prevalence in the community so that we get what's called "herd immunity" and all, even those few that aren't vaccinated, get some degree of protection. The dip in uptake of the vaccine at the "autism" scare (again, proved to not significantly raise the risk of kiddies developing autism) resulted in a mumps outbreak across the UK with significant morbidity.

I will reiterate that this particular vaccine has been under so much scrutiny recently and has consistently come out as a good and trusted vaccine. Further info is available on BUPA and NHS sites.
Life in this world is, as it were, a sojourn in a cave. What can we know of reality? For all we can see of the true nature of existence is, shall we say, no more than bewildering and amusing shadows cast upon the inner wall of the cave by the unseen blinding light of absolute truth, from which we may or may not deduce some glimmer of veracity, and we as troglodyte seekers of wisdom can only lift our voices to the unseen and say humbly "Go on, do deformed rabbit again.....it's my favourite". © Terry Pratchett in "Small Gods"
